COMP15 LTC: Meeting Oxygenation, Fluid and Electrolyte Needs

 

Meeting the health care needs of this aging population presents challenges which require knowledge and understanding of the normal physiologic changes of aging. This lesson will review age-related changes affecting two very important needs: maintaining adequate oxygenation, and fluid and electrolyte balance. The focus of this lesson is how these changes affect the delivery of nursing care.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:

- Discuss the intervention necessary to reduce myocardial demand for oxygen00
- Describe the care needed for patients with vascular or venous congestion
- Discuss the principles of treatment of the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- List nine normal physiologic changes associated with aging that affect the renal system, including the lower urinary system
- Discuss the treatment options available for the patient with incontinence
- List four age-related changes in the gastrointestinal system that affect fluid and electrolyte balance
